Tutorial #3 - Oona Chaplin Signature

Made in Photoshop CS5. Uses a fair amount of selective color layers; may not be translatable due to this. I made this for an RP character on MNI, hence the text.

Resources:  Texture 1 Texture 2 Texture 3 (by ghislaine) Oona Chaplin

1, Create a blank 500x200px canvas and paste Texture 1 onto it, sizing as you wish. Set Layer to Normal at 100%.

2. Paste Texture 2 on top of Texture 1, again, sizing as you wish. I centered the butterflies more to the right on mine. Set this layer to Divide at 100% opacity and 70% fill.

3. Duplicate the Texture 2 layer and set to Darken at 100% opacity and 70% fill.

You should have something like this now:

4. Now paste the Oona Chaplin image onto the canvas. Keep this layer at Normal at 100% opacity. We'll edit the background out later.

5. Now this might seem a bit odd, but go back to the layer mentioned in step 3 and add a layer mask. Color over the areas where Oona Chaplin appears so it doesn't look like there are butterflies on her.

6. Go back to the Oona Chaplin layer now and add a layer mask so you can take out the background. I did most of the sides in black and then towards the center, I started using a small, soft brush set to a gray color. Using gray mutes the transition a bit more, I find.

You should have something like this now:

7. Time for coloring! Add a Selective Color layer with these settings and keep it at Normal, 100% opacity.

Reds: -70, 0, -30, 20
Blacks: 0, 0, 0, 16

8. Add a Selective Color layer with these settings.

Reds: -15, 0, 5, 0
Greens: 100, 0, -100, 0
Cyans:
100, 0, -100, 0
Blues:
100, 0, -100, 0
Whites: -5, 0, 0, 15
Blacks: 50, 0, 0, 15

Set this layer to Normal at 100% opacity.

9. Add a Channel Mixer layer with these settings.

Red: 96, 5, 7
Green: -5, 99, 7
Blue: -7, 10, 104

Set this layer to Normal at 100% opacity.

You should have something like this now:

10. Paste Texture 3 onto your canvas, resizing as you see fit. Set this layer to Exclusion at 30% opacity, 20% fill. This adds a nice muted hue to the signature.

You should have something like this now:

11. Add your text! For "Isa Orellana", I used Buffett Script at size 36pt with horizontal tracking set to -75. For the smaller text, I used Tunga at 9pt with vertical tracking at 8pt and horizontal tracking at -100.

And you're done!

Dear Mr. Potter,

Words can't express what I'm feeling right now. Twelve years, come and gone. Where the time went, I cannot say.
